AmCham Costa Rica highlights Secretary Rubio’s visit as a catalyst for stronger bilateral cooperation

  • Meeting reinforces U.S.-Costa Rica commitment in trade, technology, and security

San José, Costa Rica, February 4, 2025 – The Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) welcomes U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit as a testament to the strong commercial and diplomatic ties between the United States and Costa Rica.

During his visit, Secretary Rubio praised Costa Rica as a «regional example and model emphasizing its economic stability, business-friendly environment, and reliability as a strategic investment destination for the U.S.

A key issue highlighted was the deployment of 5G technology using trusted providers to ensure data security for governments, businesses, and citizens. AmCham has consistently advocated for secure telecommunications infrastructure as a critical factor in attracting investment and fostering the digital economy’s growth.

On security —one of AmCham’s top priorities— both nations reaffirmed their strategic alliance in tackling security and migration challenges. This partnership is vital for regional stability and for addressing threats such as organized crime and illicit trafficking through coordinated and effective strategies.

“Costa Rica has long been a strategic ally of the United States. Secretary Rubio’s visit underscores the importance of our bilateral relationship and opens new doors to deepening cooperation in security, technology, and trade,” said Juan Carlos Chavarría Pozuelo, President of AmCham.

Opportunities for greater integration

AmCham has actively promoted initiatives such as Global Entry, which facilitates faster and more secure travel between the two nations. Its implementation in Costa Rica would pave the way for programs like the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), enhancing export efficiency through secure supply chain certifications.

Additionally, the Preclearance Program would allow passengers traveling from Costa Rica to the U.S. to complete immigration and customs procedures before departure, improving air connectivity and streamlining the travel experience.

AmCham remains committed to working closely with both nations’ business communities and governments to drive economic growth, attract investment, and strengthen a prosperous bilateral relationship.
